The Grind
An instrumental band rooted in traditional jazz and fused with alternative rock — guitar, upright acoustic bass, and rotating drums and saxophone. No vocals, no filler: just a tight live set built for bars, restaurants, and private events around Salt Lake City.
Jazz Roots. Rock Energy.
The Grind sits at the intersection of two traditions — the interplay and harmony of a jazz combo, and the drive and grit of alternative rock. The result is instrumental music that works as a moody background set or a full-attention headline show.
Traditional Jazz
Walking bass lines, chord extensions, and real improvisation — the vocabulary of a jazz combo, played straight.
Alternative Rock Edge
Guitar tone and rhythmic drive borrowed from alt-rock, layered on top of the jazz foundation for something with real bite.
All-Instrumental
No vocals to compete with conversation or a dining room. The Grind reads the room and adjusts — quiet dinner set or full-volume bar set.
The Lineup
A core duo of guitar and upright acoustic bass, expanding to a trio or quartet with drums and saxophone depending on the room and the booking.
Guitar
Lead and rhythm guitar carrying melody, chord voicings, and improvised solos across the set.
Upright Acoustic Bass
The backbone of the sound — a warm, woody low end straight from the jazz tradition.
Drums & Sax
Drums and saxophone join for fuller shows, adding rhythmic drive and a second lead voice.
