Two Traditions, One Band
The Grind formed in Salt Lake City around a simple idea: play jazz the way it was meant to be played — with real interplay and improvisation — but don't be afraid to bring in the volume and grit of alternative rock.
The Sound
Every song starts from a jazz foundation — walking bass lines, extended chords, and room to improvise. From there, the band leans into alternative rock: driving rhythms, heavier guitar tones, and dynamic builds that move a set from background listening to full attention.
Because the band is entirely instrumental, the set is flexible by design. It can sit quietly under conversation during a dinner rush, or carry an entire night as the headline act at a bar.
The Lineup
The core of The Grind is guitar and upright acoustic bass. For bigger rooms and longer sets, the band expands with drums and saxophone, giving the music more rhythmic drive and a second lead voice to trade off with the guitar.
